Lithium-ion fire risk can restrict where systems are installed and what is required around them. Separation distances, fire protection, emergency access, regulatory approvals and insurance can consume valuable space and add cost and complexity. ArcActive is developing its commercial storage system around these practical constraints. Battery management, power conversion, controls, thermal management and safety systems are integrated into a complete containerised energy storage solution. The system is designed to provide a defined, site-ready platform. Fire-risk requirements can make battery installations highly dependent on their surroundings, with separation distances, fire protection and access requirements varying with site layout and proximity to buildings and other assets. ArcActive is developing defined system configurations and installation requirements that provide a consistent basis for deploying storage across suitable sites. The installation takes ArcActive's technology beyond battery and system development and into a real-world microgrid environment. It provides an opportunity to operate the complete system under practical conditions and build the experience needed to support the development of future commercial and industrial installations. Deakin University's Waurn Ponds microgrid provides a valuable environment for demonstrating and evaluating new energy technologies as part of an operating energy system.
